Rachel Spearing is an experienced trainer and executive coach. She practises as a barrister and mediator in the Temple, London. Her practice spans criminal, regulatory, financial and military law. She holds an academic post as Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Portsmouth, where she lectures, is research active undertaking and commissioning research. Rachel sits on the Executive of the General Council of the Bar and was appointed a Master of the Bench by The Honourable Society of Inner Temple, where she is actively engaged in designing and delivering education training, mentoring and coaching to support access to the profession, continuing education and training of lawyers and none lawyers. She has professional links and speaks at conferences in the UK, Australia and Singapore. She joins the DNA Team supporting the executive education programs, global lecturing, leadership coaching and management programs.

  • Bar Vocational Course Manchester Metropolitan University 1999
  • Called to the Bar 1999 by the Honourable Society of Inner Temple.
  • Master of Studies Institute of Criminology Cambridge University 2012-14
  • Fellow of Higher Education and Academia 2016 
  • Education Scholarship Awards to the College of Law Brussels 1998 and the University of West Bohemia Czech Republic 1999.

Current Practice:

Rachel is a tenant at 3 Pump Court Chambers where she practices as a mediator and provides advice concerning criminal responsibility in business. Her practice at the Bar spans 16 years and includes secondments with Revenue & Customs Prosecution Office, (Asset Forfeiture Dept), the Serious Organised Crime Agency and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She prosecuted on behalf of Customs and the CPS and was an approved rape and serious sexual offences advocate. She designed and provides education and training to the Navy and Special Prosecution Authority of the Armed Forces, appearing in Courts Martial in the UK and Overseas. She has appeared in many serious high profile criminal cases.

Role at the University of Portsmouth:

Rachel is a senior lecturer based at the School of Law. She has designed and delivered curriculum and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level to students within the Law school, Psychology department and Business school in subjects related to criminal law, expert witnessing, mediation and arbitration. Rachel has both taught and designed curriculum for innovative and interactive learning to be delivered in conventional study programs and compressed for short practical courses.

Rachel is part of the Portsmouth Business School Executive Education Team where she has provided bespoke training to International Government Departments, the Armed Forces, Local and National Professional Organisations in the areas of Bribery and Corruption, Human Rights, Money Laundering, Restraint and Confiscation of the Proceeds of Crime and Expert Witnessing.

Research Activities:
Rachel’s current research activities include: Wellbeing of Lawyers, Quality of Working Life and Policy, developing services & support for wellbeing. Expert Witnesses and the Courts, Fraud and Counter-Fraud Policy with Practice, using Situational Action Theory. Executive Coaching for Leadership in Sport and Business.

Rachel speaks at Conference Nationally and Internationally on her research interests and has assisted both UK and International Regulatory Bodies with regards to her interests.

Other Activities:

Rachel was elected Western Circuit Junior between 2011-14, she is presently the Equality and Diversity Officer for The Circuit and sits on the E&D Committee at the Bar Council. She is a trained advocacy trainer, supporting new practitioners. She is the Chair of the Bar Wellbeing Project, on behalf of Bar Council, leading research into the wellness and working practices of lawyers on behalf of the profession. Rachel is also an active member of the Honourable Society of Inner Temple, involved in bar diversity, supporting access to the profession, she sits on the scholarships committee of the Inn and supports education and training events as a speaker and trainer. She was appointed a Master of the Bench in 2015 by Inner Temple. She was appointed a Trustee of the Inns of Court Bar Education Trust in July 2016. She was appointed Chairman of the Bar Conference by the Chairman of the Bar on behalf of the profession for 2017. She enjoys cooking, sailing follows horseracing and football and takes adventurous travel with family and friends.
